The European asylum system is currently facing a significant challenge, according to Hans Vorländer, Chairman of the Expert Council on Migration. Despite the pressure to act and high expectations from the public and politicians, he remains skeptical that proposed solutions will fulfill their promises. Vorländer believes in the importance of taking a realistic and pragmatic approach to migration management, focusing on adjustments that can lead to reduced irregular immigration and more efficient use of resources.

In his discussions with politicians and the SPD parliamentary group, Vorländer stressed the importance of addressing the lack of digitalization in administrative processes, ensuring smoother coordination between municipalities and authorities, and improving labor market integration for immigrants. He also touched upon the issue of readmissions, highlighting the need for Germany to work with countries of first arrival to ensure proper handling of asylum procedures and reduce the pressure on the system.

Regarding external border procedures, Vorländer emphasizes the need for legal security and independent procedural advice. For people not entitled to asylum, securing readmission agreements with countries of origin would be essential. However, complex issues related to human rights and accommodations need to be addressed.

While some may propose extreme measures to tackle the issue or focus on models like the Rwanda model, Vorländer advocates for a rules-based approach, promoting a balance between a humanitarian orientation and the management of the migration system. The European asylum system may have certain challenges, but it has shown its merit for a long time. Rather than abandoning it, the goal should be to adapt it to better accommodate the current situation.
