The EU needs to guarantee the execution of its international policies.

On August 11, 2025, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and U.S. President Donald Trump are set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. The primary topic of discussion is the potential resolution of Russian aggression against Ukraine, a conflict that has been ongoing for years.

Tensions remain high between Ukraine and Russia, with ongoing violence in the city of Saporischschja causing suffering to the local population. Bombs are falling, causing widespread distress.

However, it is important to note that as of August 2025, there are no active or viable negotiations involving a land swap between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine regarding the conflict in Saporischschja or other territories. Ukraine currently holds no Russian land to exchange, and due to recent military developments and territorial control, Ukraine lacks any bargaining chips for a land swap. This absence of leverage has caused concern among Ukraine and its allies about proposals or rhetoric suggesting Ukraine should cede territory to Russia.

In the past, former U.S. President Donald Trump had expressed interest in facilitating a "land swap" arrangement. However, this concept is misleading given the territorial realities. Ukraine has not taken Russian land that could be swapped, and Russia's annexation of Crimea remains a non-negotiable point for Kyiv and its allies. Furthermore, Ukraine maintains that its NATO membership and the return of Crimea are not on the negotiation table.

Rutte warns against concessions at Ukraine's expense. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also firmly rejected the idea of a land swap as a solution to the conflict. It is currently unclear whether President Zelenskyy will participate in the meeting.

The meeting is a crucial test for Putin, with Rutte seeing it as an opportunity to push for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Despite the challenges, the international community continues to hope for a diplomatic solution that respects Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The potential role of politics and diplomacy in resolving the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, specifically in Saporischschja, becomes more apparent as NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and U.S. President Donald Trump prepare to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. General news outlets are closely following discussions about the conflict, and there's growing concern among Ukraine and its allies about proposals or rhetoric suggesting Ukraine should cede territory to Russia, given the absence of leverage Ukraine currently has in negotiation.
