The epic duo of Frodo and Gandalf are set to reappear in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings sequel, titled The Hunt for Gollum.
Get ready, fans of Middle-earth! The much-anticipated film, The Hunt for Gollum, is set to premiere on December 17, 2027. This exciting new chapter in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic saga will see the return of two beloved characters: Frodo and Gandalf, played by Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen respectively.
The film, directed by Andy Serkis, who famously brought Gollum to life on screen, will delve into Gollum's journey between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies. Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou are responsible for penning the script.
The Hunt for Gollum will be set before Frodo leaves the Shire in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The return of Elijah Wood as Frodo is significant, as it has been 15 years since his last appearance in a Lord of the Rings film.
Ian McKellen confirmed the news about the casting at the For the Love of Fantasy fan event in London on August 17. If both actors do appear in The Hunt for Gollum, it would be the first film in 15 years that features both as Gandalf and Frodo, with the last one being The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in 2012.
The film will follow Gollum being pursued by Gandalf, Aragorn, and the Dark Lord Sauron. Peter Jackson, who directed the original trilogy, will serve as a producer for The Hunt for Gollum. The production is a Warner Bros. effort under New Line Cinema.
With the return of Gandalf and Frodo, The Hunt for Gollum may attract enough fans to make it a box-office success. These characters were some of the mainstays in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films, and their return is sure to excite fans worldwide.
Stay tuned for more updates on The Hunt for Gollum as filming is set to begin in New Zealand around mid-2026.
