Thousands in Taman Agropolitan Live in Fear after Sun Bear Sightings

Residents of Taman Agropolitan in Rantau Manis, Gua Musang, Kelantan, are living in fear following multiple sightings of a sun bear, which has reportedly caused damage to crops, livestock, and disrupted daily activities.

One resident, Siti Aminah Zakaria, 44, claims to have seen the bear attempting to access a jackfruit tree just three meters from her home. She recounted the incident, stating, "I saw the animal, about one meter tall, approaching the jackfruit tree around 6pm on the day before yesterday. My child was outside the house at the time and screamed in shock before running to get me."

On the following day, the bear was spotted in a neighbor's parking lot at approximately 11am. Another resident, Mohd Syawal Imran Abdul Rahim, 17, reported witnessing the bear digging into a termite mound.

Taman Agropolitan Residents' Safety and Development Committee Chair Roslee Ibrahim, 51, confirmed a bear was previously spotted in the residential area's Phase 1 roughly three months ago. It was also observed in Kampung 10 two weeks prior. The presence of claw marks on tree trunks has caused concern among residents, who fear the bear may become bolder and enter homes.

Local authorities have reportedly filed a report with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) in hopes of taking immediate action to ensure resident safety. Preventative measures, such as setting traps and increasing community vigilance, are likely measures being considered.

As of late May 2025, the sun bear remains in the area, leaving residents on high alert. No reports of direct attacks on humans have been reported, but the risk to safety and property persists.

The situation is being closely monitored by both residents and authorities, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

  1. Despite the ongoing fear among residents due to repeated sun bear sightings in Taman Agropolitan, there's growing attention towards a different matter, as the European leagues and Premier League football news continue to dominate the headlines.
  2. In a strange contrast, Malaysia's sports scene or more specificly, the developments in the football world, such as transfer rumors for leading European-league teams, seem to have largely escaped the attention of those living in fear.
  3. Meanwhile, discussions about alterations in Malaysian law related to wildlife conservation have arisen following the sun bear incidents, with some residents requesting stricter regulations to protect both human safety and local fauna.
