In a surprising turn of events, the production of 'Dexter: Original Sin' was unexpectedly halted four months after its initial renewal, while a new instalment, 'Dexter: Resurrection,' was fast-tracked by the new leadership at Showtime following their merger with Skydance.

According to the show's creator, Clyde Phillips, who spoke about the decision on the Dissecting Dexter podcast, the focus was shifted towards 'Dexter: Resurrection' due to its potential and the slower progress of 'Original Sin.' Phillips revealed that he had informed writers and actors before the show was unpicked up, expressing his disappointment with how the decision was handled.

'Dexter: Original Sin,' set in 1991 Miami, followed Dexter (Patrick Gibson), a student refining his killer skills with the help and support of his adoptive father Harry (Christian Slater). The series also starred Molly Brown, Christina Milian, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, and Reno Wilson. The premiere of 'Dexter: Original Sin' garnered 2.1M global viewers across Paramount+ and Showtime in its first three days of availability. However, the finale audience grew 27% over the December premiere, reaching 2.68M global viewers.

In contrast, 'Dexter: Resurrection' launched with 3.1M cross-platform viewers for the premiere episode over the first three days. The first seven days' viewership of 'Dexter: Resurrection' went up to 4.4M, outperforming the premiere of 'Original Sin' by about 25%.

Despite plans for the production of 'Dexter: Original Sin' being in place before its indefinite suspension, the available search results do not specify the location where it was planned to be produced. On the other hand, 'Dexter: Resurrection' has not yet revealed its filming location.

It's worth noting that Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey guest-starred on 'Dexter: Original Sin.' However, no writers room was opened for Season 2 of the original series, making the hiatus of 'Dexter: Original Sin' permanent.

The previous Showtime regime announced in early April that Season 2 had been greenlighted for 'Dexter: Original Sin.' However, this decision was made while Showtime was picking up 'Resurrection,' leading to the cancellation of the second season of the original series.

The exact reasons behind the cancellation of 'Dexter: Original Sin' remain unclear, with sources suggesting logistical reasons might have played a part. Nevertheless, the focus now shifts to 'Dexter: Resurrection,' which promises to continue the dark and intriguing storyline of the beloved series.
