Lately, the report that the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) classifies the AfD as "hostile towards the establishment" has been making headlines. Originally, the report remained concealed, only its conclusion was revealed. Recently, we get an inside look at the 1108-page assessment and the rationale behind this classification.

The "upper echelon of the AfD" exhibits an "unyielding hostility towards foreigners," asserts the BfV, according to "Der Spiegel," which gained access to the extensive report. The assessment reveals that the authority has documented 353 members' extremist statements, from the local level to party leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla. Almost the entire federal board is cited in the report with such statements.

Representative Hans-Thomas Tillschneider of Saxony-Anhalt reportedly stated in 2023, "If we have a government that is waging war against us, then we will wage war against this government. We have come to remove these figures from their seats." Björn Höcke echoed similar sentiments around a year later, declaring, "The cartel parties are dissolving our Germany like a piece of soap under a warm water stream!"

"No Moderation in Sight"

Statements such as these, along with a slew of racist and far-right ones, explain the BfV's ruling. "No signs of moderation are noticeable," it continues according to "Der Spiegel". Dissenting voices are few and far between. "It is still possible for more moderate forces within the AfD to overturn the anti-constitutional stance of the entire party," the intelligence service doubts.

The BfV perceives a "continual hostility towards foreigners, refugees, and Muslims" within the AfD. Affiliates view these groups as "dangerous collectives." The AfD frequently presents "remigration" as a "solution" to the "problem." However, the BfV deems this misleading, as several AfD members have discussions of "millionfold remigration," which exceeds the number of deportable foreigners "several fold."

Politics "Democracy in Jeopardy" The BfV Warns Against AfD Threat to Democratic PrinciplesThe intelligence agency also accuses the AfD of targeting the "democratic principle" itself. Members repeatedly tarnish other politicians and call them "political gangsters" or "traitors." The report by the intelligence agency lists numerous instances where AfD politicians liken the government to the Nazi regime or East Germany.

The AfD has already filed a lawsuit against the classification by the BfV. Weidel labeled the assessment "a grave breach of law and an attack on democracy." Previously, the party retained attorneys who cautioned the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. The AfD demanded, in a 195-page document, that it refrain from classifying it as a "confirmed far-right organization." When the party was designated as a right-wing extremist suspect a few years ago, the party leadership also filed a lawsuit. The Cologne Administrative Court ruled the process legal at the time.

Additional Insights- The reasoning behind the BfV classifying the AfD as a "proven right-wing extremist organization" encompasses several key factors: violations of constitutional principles, xenophobic and anti-Muslim stances, the threat to Germany's democratic system, and connections to right-wing extremist groups.- The BfV's assessment reveals an increasing hostility and extremism within the AfD's leadership structure, exemplified by inflammatory statements and racist views towards foreigners, refugees, and Muslims.- The AfD's anti-democratic stance is further demonstrated by its repeated defamation of German politicians and comparison of the government to authoritarian regimes.- The potential consequences of the BfV's classification include increased scrutiny of the AfD's activities, a loss of political support, and possible legal action from the party.

  1. Conclusively, the AfD's stance on several key issues, including war-and-conflicts, politics, general-news, and crime-and-justice, leads the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) to classify them as a proven right-wing extremist organization.
  2. In the extensive assessment, the BfV concludes that the AfD exhibits a persistent hostility towards foreigners, refugees, and Muslims, viewing these groups as dangerous collectives.
  3. The Constitutional report reveals that the leadership of the AfD, including Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, has made extremist statements.
  4. The pollster, Der Spiegel, reports that the BfV perceives no signs of moderation within the AfD, with dissenting voices few and far between.
  5. The AfD's employment policy of "remigration" is seen as misleading by the BfV, as several AfD members have discussions of "millionfold remigration," which far exceeds the number of deportable foreigners.
