Hot Off the Press! France Slaps Racist National Rally Deputy, Daniel Grenon, with a Fine

Mark your calendars, folks! On July 1, 2024, amidst a heated debate about binational individuals in France, the notorious National Rally (RN) deputy, Daniel Grenon, dropped a bomb during a local debate organized by L'Yonne républicaine: "There are people who are Maghrebi, who have entered the government as ministers, etc. I feel that these people don't have their place in high positions. That's it. After that, the Maghrebi binational has their place in France. They do. But not in high positions."

Fast-forward to May 2, and Mr. Grenon found himself with a €3,000 fine, nearly double the prosecutor's initial request, slapped by the correctional court in Sens (Yonne) for "public provocation to discrimination" and "public insult" based on "origin, ethnicity, nation, race, or religion." To add salt to the wound, the court ordered damages of €1,500 for each of the three civil parties: the Movement Against Racism and for Friendship Between Peoples (MRAP) of the Yonne, the League of Human Rights, and the International League Against Racism and Anti-Semitism.

Jordan Bardella, then RN leader, had previously dubbed Grenon's remarks as "abject," positioning him among the "black sheep" of the party. Despite the stir, the deputy managed to claim victory in the legislative elections, securing 51.38% of the vote. A few months later, he was booted out of the RN.

"We want to emphasize that Mr. Grenon’s racism is not 'soft'," Agnès Cluzel, president of the MRAP of the Yonne, commented on the verdict. "It's an ideology that has been entrenched in his functioning for decades," she added.

Florence Loury, the left-wing united candidate who lost the elections to Mr. Grenon, had termed her opponent as "racist." In contrast, Jean-Marc Ponelle, Mr. Grenon's lawyer, defended his client's remarks, claiming they "do not amount to racial hatred" and citing the political context in relation to the RN's proposals on binationality.

Grenon struggled to clarify the meaning of his remarks: "If there's a conflict, the binational can decide to leave."

The RN, historically associated with anti-immigration policies, Euroscepticism, and nationalist rhetoric[^1^], has had its fair share of controversies, with members being accused of xenophobic rhetoric and ties to extremist groups.

[^1]: The RN, formerly known as the Front National, is a French far-right party that has endeavored to distance itself from overt racism, maintaining a focus on national sovereignty and cultural identity under Marine Le Pen’s leadership.

A fascinating exploration into the racially-charged political scene unfolding in France! The fine imposed on Daniel Grenon highlights the intolerance of public discrimination in various capacities. Fellow conspirators, for a deeper dive into this murky waters, keep an eye out for our upcoming features on RN's divisive policies and ideologies, and let the games commence!
