Cue the music, folks! The historical manuscript collection at the birthplace of the brilliant Baroque composer, Georg Friedrich Handel, located in the vibrant city of Halle, has now been digitized. Jens Wehmann, the librarian of the Handel House, shared this thrilling news with the German Press Agency, mentioning that the collection includes approximately 2,500 objects, with a whopping 800 of them being priceless musical manuscripts.
One of the absolute gems among these is a very early copy of the coronation hymns of the English kings from 1730. Spanning a stunning 160 pages, this manuscript was recently acquired at the famous auction house, Christie's in London, for around 20,000 euros.
The Digitized Gems: More Than Just Handel
Not entirely focused on Handel, the digitized documents in Halle house manuscripts by a plethora of local musicians, some of which include Robert Franz (1815-1892), Carl Loewe (1796-1869), and Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654). Handel's influence is undeniably present, as evidenced by the correspondence of Robert Franz, who was an active Handel editor in his time.
Art for the Eyes: Digitized Graphics
Around five years ago, around 1,500 historical graphics were digitized. These engravings offer glimpses of Handel himself, various Halle landmarks, and old city plans and views from the 18th/19th centuries. Now, interested parties can easily access these masterpieces online. Unfortunately, the museum does not own any originals of Handel.

The upcoming 2023 Handel Festival, taking place from June 6 to 15, is a must-attend event. The theme this year? "Fresh Wind: The Young Handel in Italy". Experts predict that over 44,000 visitors from Germany and abroad will grace the festivities. Last year, the Handel House museum was visited by a remarkable 23,500 people, which is nearly the same number as in 2023.
