The Classroom Opens as NYC's New Eco-Friendly Event Hub in Wagner Park
A new eco-friendly community space called The Classroom has opened in Wagner Park, Lower Manhattan. The 1,200-square-foot pavilion launched on 24 March 2023 as part of a wider $300 million redesign of the park. It also marks a key step in the $200 million Battery Coastal Resiliency Project, aimed at protecting the area from rising sea levels. The Classroom is designed to be a flexible event space, complete with 90 chairs, 20 tables, a podium and child-sized furniture. It also features advanced AV equipment, including a large projection screen and a 98-inch monitor. Visitors can enjoy unobstructed views of the Statue of Liberty and the New Jersey skyline from inside the pavilion.
The building is targeting net-zero carbon certification, using sustainable elements like geothermal energy and recycled materials. Its rooftop garden is now open to the public, while a restaurant is planned to open in the pavilion by 2026. Reservations for The Classroom are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with hourly rates starting at $250. The pavilion sits within Wagner Park, which has also been upgraded with flood defences as part of the wider resiliency project.
The opening of The Classroom adds a modern, adaptable venue to Lower Manhattan. Its eco-friendly design and coastal protection measures align with the city's long-term sustainability goals. The space is now available for bookings, with further developments expected in the coming years.
