"The Chaotic Stage Performance": at the zenith of Farce and Silliness

A humorous British production, bearing more resemblance to a comedy than a traditional murder-mystery, effectively delivers its intended laughs.

"The Chaotic Stage Performance": at the zenith of Farce and Silliness

In the heart of Quebec, a new musical show has taken centre stage at various theatres, including Théâtre de la Dame de cœur, Théâtre du Vieux-Terrebonne, Salle André-Mathieu, La Bordée, and Centre culturel Desjardins. This production is none other than the Quebecois adaptation of the acclaimed British success, The Play That Goes Wrong.

Despite not being a mis en abyme, featuring characters played by actors with varying talents in an underfunded troupe, as some might expect, this adaptation is a comedic masterpiece that showcases the talents of Stéphane Breton, Rémi-Pierre Paquin, and Fabien Cloutier, among others. Their comic acting feats are worthy of applause, adding a delightful touch to the production.

However, it's important to note that this adaptation is not directed by André Robitaille and does not satirize theatrical representation codes and conventions, such as the fourth wall. Instead, it is characterised by an excess of comedy, with gags piling up in an unstoppable fireworks display.

While the comedic content sometimes takes precedence over the narrative thread, viewers are treated to a series of hilarious mishaps, including props in the wrong place, decorative elements falling, doors not opening, an elevator explosion, actresses fainting, and actors not being prepared. The play is a disaster, but in the best possible way.

Regrettably, the first Quebec production of this musical show was rather disappointing. However, the current run is a testament to the enduring appeal of The Play That Goes Wrong.

In other news, the general director of Publications BLD, which publishes "Les Débrouillards" among others, Isabelle Vaillancourt, passed away on Sunday. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time.

Lastly, for those who missed the initial run of The Play That Goes Wrong, there's good news. The play is scheduled to be reprised next June at the Théâtre du Nouveau Monde. So, mark your calendars and get ready for another round of laughter and mishaps.

The new adaptation of The Play That Goes Wrong in Quebec is a testament to the region's rich entertainment scene, blending culture with movies-and-tv through its comedic take on live theatre. The upcoming reprise at Théâtre du Nouveau Monde next June promises another opportunity for viewers to immerse themselves in this unique mix of entertainment.
