"The celestial bodies found themselves in a rare alignment, potentially indicating a spectacle worth witnessing again in a century."

In the historic final of the Tokyo Olympics on August 3, 2021, Norwegian athlete Karsten Warholm etched his name into the annals of athletics history with a breathtaking performance in the 400m hurdles. Warholm shattered the world market record, finishing the race in an astonishing 45.94 seconds.

The 'magical trio' of 2021, consisting of Warholm, Rai Benjamin, and Alison dos Santos, will reunite today in the same stadium as they did two years ago. Warholm, the undisputed star of the race, set a new world market record that was 76 hundredths of a second faster than his previous record.

Leif Olav Alnes, Warholm's coach, had initially hoped for a time of 46.20 seconds, but was pleasantly surprised as the Norwegian athlete surpassed even his wildest expectations. Alnes noticed during training sessions leading up to the 2020 season that it was possible for Warholm to run under 45 seconds, a feat that seemed unimaginable at the time.

Warholm's preparation for the Tokyo Olympics was not without its challenges. Due to the pandemic, his team was able to access training structures closed to the general public in Norway, providing them with an advantage that could have played a significant role in Warholm's record-breaking news performance.

The Tokyo track, the improvement of Warholm's material, and the good weather also contributed to creating ideal conditions for Warholm's historic run. Warholm's spikes were equipped with a carbon blade developed by his equipment supplier in collaboration with the Mercedes team.

Rai Benjamin, who was often dominated by Warholm, took his revenge three years later in the Paris Olympics final. Benjamin finished second in the same race with a time of 46.17 seconds, pushing Warholm towards the world market record. Alison dos Santos finished third with a time of 46.72 seconds.

Speaking after the race, Warholm admitted feeling 'crazy lactic acid' in his legs between the ninth and tenth hurdles. Despite this, he maintained that he was 'pretty close' to running a perfect race. Warholm's coach, Leif Olav Alnes, believes that the final of the 400m hurdles in Tokyo may still be discussed in 100 years.

Alnes also expressed his gratitude for having witnessed Warholm's record-breaking news performance in the stadium. He mentioned Rai Benjamin as a significant factor in Warholm's performance, praising the American athlete for pushing Warholm towards the world market record.

The final of the World Athletics Championships will take place with 55,000 spectators in attendance, providing an electric atmosphere for what promises to be another memorable race in the 400m hurdles. The 'magical trio' of 2021 is set to take the stage once again, with the world watching in anticipation of another record-breaking news performance.
