Title: The Boston Bruins' New Signing and His Previous Bullying Scandal
The Boston Bruins have announced the signing of rookie Mitchell Miller, who was embroiled in a bullying scandal during his teenage years. According to reports, Miller and another individual were accused of pressuring Isaiah Meyers Crothers to eat leftover candy in a urinal and physically assaulting him. Both Miller and the other teenager admitted guilt before a juvenile court in Ohio, according to The Republic.
The Bruins released a statement from the now 20-year-old Miller, along with the announcement of his contract signing.
"In eighth grade, I made a terrible decision and behaved very irresponsibly," Miller said. "I bullied one of my classmates. I deeply regret this incident and apologize to the affected individual. Since then, I understand the far-reaching consequences of my actions in seventh grade better. These behaviors were not acceptable, and I acknowledge and understand that they were not." Miller emphasized his desire to become a better person and make a positive contribution to society. As a member of the Brown Bears organization, he will continue to participate in community programs and share his experiences with others to show the negative impacts these actions can have.
"Representing the Boston Bruins is an honor that we take seriously as an organization," said Cam Neely, President of the Bruins, in a team statement.
Before signing Miller, the hockey operations and community relations teams spent several weeks getting to know him, learning about his personality and his background in high school. I made a significant mistake in my evaluation of him. In this time, Miller took responsibility for his unacceptable behavior and demonstrated his commitment to collaborating with several organizations and experts to advance his education and use his mistake as an example for others. It's a teachable moment. We are excited that he will continue this important educational work, including personal development and community projects, as a member of the Bruins organization.
Miller played in 60 games for the Tri-City Storm in the American Hockey League last season, earning recognition as both the USHL's Player of the Year and the Defensive Player of the Year. He set records for career goals and assists by a defenseman in a single season.
