The 2022 Olympics in Beijing didn't lack excitement, despite the challenges presented by highs and lows for participants.

For athletes who missed out on medals, such as Jamaican bobsledder Rolando Reid, the experience was still unique. Medal winners, like Canadian speed skater Isabelle Weidemann, left Beijing with colors fading from their sight, encapsulating the rollercoaster of Olympic emotions.

Elana Meyers Taylor, an American bobsledder, delivered a powerful performance, overcoming COVID protocols and securing two silver and a bronze medal, becoming the most decorated American bobsledder. Her hotel room confinement due to a positive COVID-19 test couldn't hinder her spirit, as she lifted weights during her competitors' early training sessions.

The COVID-19 pandemic tested some athletes, like American figure skater Vincent Zhou, who withdrew from the competition. The "closed loop" system in Beijing managed to keep the virus at bay, allowing the games to proceed safely, according to IOC President Thomas Bach, who declared Beijing "one of the safest places on Earth" until the closing ceremony.

As the world grappled with the COVID-19 crisis and faced a new threat from Russian forces near the Ukrainian border, the Olympic spirit remained. In spite of ongoing doping allegations, Russia participated in the Olympics, with their best performance in the closing ceremony's men's 50-km cross-country ski race.

The 15-year-old Kamila Valieva’s story cast a shadow on the figure skating event, with her team welcoming her back to Russia after the tournament. Controversy surrounding missing tennis star Peng Shuai and Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva highlighted the challenges faced by the IOC.

While the Olympics in Beijing concluded, the world looked forward to the 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo and Milan, where we would witness moments of triumph and heartbreak.

These Olympics pushed boundaries, showcasing the resilience of athletes in challenging conditions like Valieva's implosion and Shcherbakova's isolation. We must acknowledge the role of greed and corruption in shaping young athletes' dreams but strive for a better future where sports inspire unity rather than division.
