Former Kuala Lumpur Football Star T. Gopinath Naidu Passes Away at 50

KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 - Former Malaysian footballer, T. Gopinath Naidu, a prominent figure in the 1990s football scene, passed away yesterday at the age of 50. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) shared the sad news through a post on their official Facebook page.

In their condolences, FAM expressed sympathies to Gopinath's family. "We mourn the passing of T. Gopinath Naidu, a former member of the national squad who played for Kuala Lumpur (1992-1994) and Perak (1996)," the post read.

Nicknamed the "Kuala Lumpur Wonder Boy," Gopinath had a remarkable career, playing a significant role in helping 'The City Boys' secure back-to-back FA Cup titles in 1993 and 1994. His exceptional talent earned him international training and playing opportunities, which included stints with English club Aston Villa and German side Bayern Leverkusen.

However, persistent knee injuries forced him to retire from professional football at the young age of 25 in 1999.

During his time with the national team, Gopinath represented Malaysia at major competitions, such as the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan, and the qualifying rounds for the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. His impressive career left behind a lasting legacy in Malaysian football.
