The Archers' Controversial Decision: Grace Archer's Shocking Fate

The Archers, the world's longest-running radio serial, was launched on New Year's Day 1951. Its creator, Godfrey Baseley, developed a unique formula for the show, blending education, information, and entertainment. However, a controversial decision by Baseley early on involved the old character ai, Grace Archer.

The Archers was inspired by a proposal from Henry Burtt, a Lincolnshire farmer, for a 'farming Dick Barton' without violence. Godfrey Baseley, the farming producer for BBC Midland region, developed this idea into a formula: 10% education, 30% general information, and 60% entertainment. Baseley, along with Geoffrey Webb, who invented the serial and was significantly involved in its development, created a show that quickly became popular due to its engaging storylines.

One of the most notable aspects of The Archers is its theme tune, Barwick Green. Selected by Godfrey Baseley as his Desert Island Discs choice in 1969, it has become synonymous with the show. The maypole dance used in the show is taken from Arthur Wood's 1924 suite Native Heath, named after Barwick-in-Elmet in West Yorkshire.

However, a controversial decision by Baseley involved the old character ai, Grace Archer. Due to potential trade union issues with the actress, Baseley chose to kill off the character in a fire. This decision had a significant impact on listener engagement and marked a turning point in the show's history.

The Archers, with its unique formula and engaging storylines, has maintained its popularity for over seven decades. Despite controversial decisions like the fate of old character ai, Grace Archer, the show continues to evolve and captivate audiences, solidifying its status as a radio institution.
