"The anticipated weather indicative device will be in play during the initial Big Ten match-up between the Badgers and Terps"
Wisconsin Badgers and Maryland Terps Prepare for Big Ten Conference Opener
The Wisconsin Badgers (2-1) will face the Maryland Terps (3-0) in their Big Ten Conference opener this weekend, with both teams eager to make a strong start to the season.
Last week, the Badgers suffered their first loss of the season against No. 14 Alabama, losing 38-14. Despite holding Alabama to 72 yards rushing, the Badgers' secondary was shredded for 382 yards and four touchdowns by quarterback Ty Simpson. Reserve quarterback Danny O'Neil completed 11 of 17 passes with one touchdown and two interceptions in the game.
The status of Wisconsin's starting quarterback, Billy Edwards Jr., is uncertain due to a sprained knee. Edwards, who passed for 2,281 yards with 15 touchdowns last season at Maryland before transferring to Wisconsin, will be eligible to play for the Badgers starting in the 2025-2026 basketball season.
Meanwhile, the Terps have been undefeated so far, winning their games against Towson, Florida Atlantic, and Northern Illinois by a combined score of 103-33. La'khi Roland had a 100-yard interception return that put Maryland up 41-0 early in the third quarter against Towson.
Coach Mike Locksley of Maryland believes this game will provide a clear assessment of their team's capabilities. "We've had some good wins so far, but this will be our first real test," he said. "Wisconsin is a great team, and we're looking forward to the challenge."
The Badgers, who average 332.7 yards of total offense, are ranked fifth in the nation in rushing defense, giving up only 46.3 yards per game. Wisconsin has won all four meetings with Maryland, including a 23-10 win three years ago in Madison.
Maryland averages 382.7 yards per game and is 11-of-14 in red zone conversions, including five touchdowns. Freshman Malik Washington earned Maryland's starting quarterback job after Billy Edwards Jr.'s transfer to Wisconsin.
The game will mark Maryland's first road game of the season. The Badgers ran for just 92 yards on 34 attempts, an average of 2.7 yards per carry, against Alabama.
Coach Luke Fickell of Wisconsin has stated that Billy Edwards Jr.'s recovery from his injury is day-to-day. The outcome of this game is uncertain due to the question mark over Wisconsin's starting quarterback.
This Big Ten Conference opener promises to be an exciting match-up between two determined teams. Whether Wisconsin can bounce back from their loss against Alabama or Maryland can continue their winning streak remains to be seen.
