Hungen (dpa) - Superstars in the world of folk music, Karl-Heinz (76) and Bernd Ulrich (74), better known as Die Amigos, have now been granted honorary citizenship of their humble hometown, Hungen. On the bustling market square of the town in central Hesse, Mayor Rainer Wengorsch (Free Voters) presented them with their prestigious titles.

With a captivated crowd of townsfolk and fans alike, Bernd Ulrich spoke up, humbly stating, "This is a massive honor. But we will always be the two village musicians from Villingen."

The magical duo, whose roots go back to the Hungen district of Villingen, have been making beautiful music together for a remarkable 55 years. Their enchanting albums have graced the top of the German album charts an astounding 16 times. Some of their timeless tunes include "I'll Go Through Fire for You" and "Between Love and Madness."

Rooted in Reality

"For me, you are legends," admitted Mayor Wengorsch during his speech, praising the duo's ability to unite young and old with their genuine charm. "You've remained true to yourself, remaining 'human'." The decision to honor Die Amigos as citizens was met with a unanimous nod in the city council.

In a heartwarming act, Die Amigos graced the audience with renditions of some of their most beloved songs, including "Like the Rolling Stones" from their upcoming album "Live Now." Set to be released in July, the duo sings, "We do like the Rolling Stones, we never stop." And as Bernd Ulrich made clear, they have no intention of slowing down, but will take things a bit more leisurely, performing around 70 to 80 dates yearly. As a final act of love and gratitude, the duo even treated the audience to 120 liters of free beer!
