Hungen, Germany - They're the superstars of folk pop music and yet manage to keep things real: Brothers Karl-Heinz (76) and Bernd Ulrich (74), famed as Die Amigos, have been named honorary citizens of their hometown, Hungen. At a festival on the bustling market square of the town in central Hesse, Mayor Rainer Wengorsch (Free Voters) handed them theKeys to the town, praising their down-to-earth nature and enduring appeal.
"For me, you are legends," said Wengorsch in his speech, praising the brothers' human touch, which brings together young and old, keeping their roots intact. "Ich geh für dich durchs Feuer" and "Zwischen Liebe und Wahnsinn" are just two of their many hits, and their albums have topped the official German album charts a whopping 16 times.
The award was a "huge honor" for Bernd Ulrich, who assured the several hundred residents and fans present that "We will always remain the two village musicians from Villingen." Die Amigos, who were born and raised in the Villingen district of Hungen, have been making music together for a whopping 55 years.

"Retirement is not a word we know"
To the delight of the audience, Die Amigos took to the stage and sang some of their hits, including "Wie die Rolling Stones" from their upcoming album "Lebe jetzt", which is set to be released in July. "We do it like the Rolling Stones, we never stop," goes the lyrics - and indeed, Die Amigos seem determined to keep going.
"Music is fun," emphasized Bernd Ulrich, assuring fans that "retirement" is not in their vocabulary. While they'll scale back a bit, with 70 to 80 shows this year, they're far from quitting. As a grand finale, the duo treated everyone to 120 liters of free beer.
