The Absence of Thunder - Will the KPMG Women's PGA Championship Reinstate Major Excitement?

🏆 The KPMG Women's PGA Championship: A Promising Showdown 🏆

The golf universe has its eyes set on the Fields Ranch East course at PGA Frisco in Texas, as the KPMG Women's PGA Championship kicks off this week. It's high time the women's Majors hit the bullseye, taking the spotlight they truly deserve.

In contrast to the consistent fanfare and mass appeal of men's Majors, women's Majors have often struggled to carve out their space, particularly when they share the limelight with a men's signature event, like the Travelers Championship this week.

Flashback to 2014, when the USGA held the US Open and US Women's Open at Pinehurst No. 2 back-to-back, aiming to amplify women's golf. This doubleheader elevated the visibility and recognition of women's Major, but we'll have to wait until 2029 for a similar spectacle at Pinehurst.

Even with compelling storylines and extraordinary play, such as the largest playoff in LPGA Major history at The Chevron Championship or the grueling test at Erin Hills at the US Women's Open, these tournaments didn't quite captivate audiences as much as they should have. A surge in attendance would undoubtedly resonate with fans at home and create a more riveting viewing experience.

However, the tide seems to be turning, thanks to Women's Golf Day (WGD) stepping up to the plate. This year marks WGD's 10th anniversary, and it's proving that when done right, outreach can quickly spark interest and engagement.

In May, WGD's Signature Series event, featuring 80 women, was held at Fields Ranch East, the same venue hosting this week's Major. This event not only generated buzz for the upcoming championship, but also piqued the curiosity of non-golfing women, adding to the ticket sales and crowd numbers.

"The energy, camaraderie, and joy shared throughout the week underscored why creating inclusive, welcoming golf experiences matters so much," said Dan Surette, Chief Sales Officer at Omni Hotels & Resorts. WGD is not just a celebration, it's smart promotion, proven to convert newcomers and fill fairways.

LaVonda Renfro, COO of Veritex Community Bank, which sponsors numerous TeamVeritex Golf Ambassadors, including World No 1 Scottie Scheffler, and LPGA player Cheyenne Knight, believes this kind of outreach is crucial. "Golf is an incredible tool for connection, storytelling, and defining values. We've found that women are just as eager to participate as men; the difference is, they're not invited as often, sometimes not at all," she said. "That's why we applaud organizations like Women's Golf Day... This is what building community through golf truly looks like."

The women's game has the stars, the substance, and now it appears to have the momentum. The KPMG Women's PGA Championship has all the ingredients to perform and deliver a legendary event. With the solid foundation laid by WGD, hopes are high that the women's game will finally step out of the shadows and into the sun.
