Thaksin finds optimism behind bars, granted with 15,000 baht for personal expenses
In a significant development on September 9, 2023, the Supreme Court (SCOTUS) ordered Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister of Thailand, to serve a one-year imprisonment sentence for three cases. Thaksin was subsequently brought to Bangkok's Klongprem Central Prison.
The following day, Thaksin was visited by his daughters, who brought him 15,000 baht for his spending. However, Thaksin's son Panthongtae, also known as Oak, was not present during the visit.
The Department of Corrections has imposed certain restrictions on Thaksin's finances. Deposits are limited to 15,000 baht, and his daily spending is capped at 500 baht. Thaksin's usual daily routine in prison includes waking at 6am, sleeping at 9.30pm, eating boiled and parboiled eggs for breakfast, reading, watching television, and walking with arm swings.
Despite these restrictions, Thaksin's morale was reported to be good, and he mainly uses the money for small meals, according to the spokeswoman. Thaksin's grandchildren also sent him moral support through a letter during the visit.
However, Thaksin's health has been a concern. He has hypertension, lacks sufficient rest, and is experiencing hair loss. The court rejected Thaksin's claims of illness, and he was admitted to Bangkok Remand Prison on Sept 9. During the visit, Thaksin was slightly unwell, according to Paetongtarn Shinawatra.
Thaksin was not allowed to stay at Police General Hospital due to the court's rejection of his illness claims. The visit was brief due to Thaksin's health condition.
It is worth noting that Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the leader of the Pheu Thai Party and Thaksin's daughter, was dismissed from office by the Constitutional Court in August for an ethics violation after only a year in power.
Thaksin's parole is scheduled for early 2024. The exact date of his release remains to be seen.
