Thaksin Shinawatra's Prison Sentence Reignites Political Tension in Thailand

Thailand's top court has ruled that former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra did not serve his 2023 jail term properly, triggering public outrage and allegations of special treatment.

The court's decision, announced on Tuesday, states that Thaksin's previous stay in a VIP hospital ward in 2023 was not considered as serving the full term. As a result, his one-year prison sentence, confirmed by the Supreme Court in September 2025, officially continues.

Thaksin began serving this sentence in the Bangkok Remand Prison around early September 2025, after completing a mandatory five-day quarantine there. He spent the majority of his prison term in a healthcare facility and did not spend a night in a cell.

Thaksin's daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who was recently sacked from the prime minister post by the Constitutional Court, said that her father remained "in good spirits" following the court's verdict.

The Shinawatras have been a dominant force in Thai politics for the past two decades. However, their political dynasty has seen a decline in popularity with the rise of the progressive Move Forward Party. Despite winning the most seats in an election in 2023, the Move Forward Party was disbanded due to a leaked phone call with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen over a border dispute.

This latest development in Thaksin's legal saga comes at a time when Thailand is grappling with other political and social issues. The border dispute escalated into deadly clashes, and the constitutional court has removed a prime minister from office, although not explicitly stated in the bullet points provided.

Notably, Thaksin had been in exile for 15 years before his return to Thailand in 2023. His return was met with accusations of abuse of power.

As of now, the court has not yet announced a new prime minister following Paetongtarn Shinawatra's sacking. The political landscape in Thailand continues to evolve, and this ruling adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing power struggle.
