Thailand's Political Index Plummets to 4.7 in May, According to Suan Dusit Poll
Headline: Thailand's Political Disenchantment Reaches a High as Coalition Rifts and Scandals Mount
Thailand's political pulse took a dive this May, plummeting to a depressing 4.7 out of 10, according to the Suan Dusit Poll. This disheartening dip may very well mirror the growing mistrust and disillusionment the public feels towards politics in the country.
In a report published last Sunday, the poll, conducted by Suan Dusit University, reveals a downward spiral, with all indicators showing a concerning decrease from the previous month's rating of 4.82. The index is based on a robust list of 25 indicators.
Chairwoman of Suan Dusit Poll, Pornphan Buathong, has suggested that the decline in the political index likely stems from the waning hope and weary disposition of Thais towards politics. The contributing factors could include allegations of collusion in the Senate voting process, tensions between coalition partners Pheu Thai and Bhumjaithai, and concerns about transparency and efficiency in the budgeting process.
The survey included a whopping 2,168 participants and was conducted from 26th to 30th May. Among the 25 indicators, the top-scoring ones encompassed:
- Performance of opposition leaders
- People's rights and liberties
- Educational development
- Public inclusion
- Overall political party performance
- National security
- Prime Minister's performance
- Political stability
- Policy enforcement
- Government performance
Intriguingly, the top three government achievements, as perceived by the respondents, revolve around addressing tourism issues, tackling economic challenges, and upgrading the disaster warning system. The preferred trio of government politicians includes Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga.
While the Suan Dusit Poll's May 2022 report doesn't provide explicit details on the factors behind the public disenchantment, broader themes like criticisms of democracy and governance, restrictions on freedom of expression, and elite influence likely contribute to the overall disillusionment observed in Thai politics.
