Thailand Allows Temporary Relief for Cargo Trucks Amid Border Tensions with Cambodia

Recent developments in the ongoing tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have resulted in a temporary relaxation of border control measures, allowing for the movement of pre-registered cargo trucks.

The announcement came in response to a Facebook post by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, which claimed that Thailand had requested the reopening of border crossings. However, the Thai army clarified that no such request for a full border reopening was made.

The relief measure, approved by the Thai-Cambodian Border Management Task Force on June 27, 2025, allows cross-border movement of trucks that had completed export or transit customs declarations by June 25, 2025. The exemption is specific to vehicles needing to cross into and return from Cambodia via Sa Kaeo province.

During her official visit to the border area on June 26, 2025, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra held discussions with relevant agencies to assess the impact of strict border control measures. She instructed security agencies to coordinate a joint meeting with government departments to explore ways to mitigate the effects on the local population.

On June 29, the Burapha Task Force coordinated with relevant agencies to establish operational guidelines and requested support from the Cambodian side to implement the relief. The clarification issued by Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, on June 29, 2025, stated that only a temporary relaxation was requested at Sa Kaeo for pre-registered cargo trucks with valid documentation.

It is important to note that this temporary relaxation is not a full border reopening. Routine travel across the Thai-Cambodian land border remains largely suspended as of late June 2025. Although a ceasefire was agreed upon at the end of July 2025, there is no indication from the sources that this has translated into a full reopening for all types of traffic.

Therefore, the current situation reflects limited, controlled access primarily for certain cargo rather than a comprehensive reopening of the border. As the situation continues to develop, updates will be provided accordingly.
