Thailand-Cambodia Border Tensions: A Fragile Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Violations

The Thailand-Cambodia border tensions remain volatile despite a recent conditional ceasefire agreement brokered in Malaysia. The ceasefire, agreed under international pressure and facilitated by Malaysian and U.S. officials, has been fragile and reportedly violated by Cambodia according to the Thai military.

The renewed clashes, which erupted on July 24, 2025, near the Preah Vihear Temple, have resulted in several thousand people being displaced and martial law being declared in Thai border provinces. The violations include continued clashes despite the ceasefire pact, with Thailand accusing Cambodia of breaking the agreement.

The conflict also saw Cambodia allegedly attempting to broaden hostilities through attacks on Thailand’s southern coast, which Thailand repelled. Internationally, the ceasefire was pressured by Malaysia and the U.S., with the latter leveraging trade negotiations to push for peace. The United Nations Security Council held private meetings considering the security implications, but no decisive enforcement or peacekeeping deployment has been reported.

Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai made an official statement regarding the border tensions on Tuesday. The Thai Government has lodged complaints with Malaysia, the current ASEAN Chair, the United States, and the People's Republic of China about Cambodia's breach of the ceasefire agreement. The Thai Government emphasized that Cambodia lacks sincerity in upholding the ceasefire agreement.

In a show of solidarity, the Thai Government pays tribute to the heroic deeds of our brave soldiers who have sacrificed their lives to protect our sovereignty and territorial integrity, and ensure the safety of the Thai people. The Thai military forces have responded decisively to protect Thai sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the lives of innocent civilians.

The Thai Government urges the public to follow updates only through official channels and calls upon all citizens to show utmost restraint and stay united, and not to fall victim to disinformation or political manipulation aimed at causing domestic division by opposing sides.

The Thai Government is committed to ending clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border as soon as possible. All agencies in the area have been tasked to fully facilitate and support all evacuees. The ceasefire agreement was reached between Thailand and Cambodia in a dialogue and negotiation in Putrajaya. The ceasefire agreement reflects the shared hope of the international community to restore peace to both countries.

The Thai Government has assigned the Ministry of Interior and relevant agencies to urgently provide assistance and care for those affected by the border tensions, particularly with regard to repatriation. The government has not made any statements regarding heavy rain and strong waves expected in parts of Thailand or Chinese EV makers vying for Indonesia, Thailand sales.
