Thai Foreign Ministry Squashes Cambodia's ICJ Claim Following Border Talks

Is there a border dispute simmering between Thailand and Cambodia? Recent events suggest so, as contradictory statements surface following the sixth meeting of the Thai-Cambodian Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) held in Phnom Penh on June 14-15.

After the meeting, Cambodia's Secretariat of State for Border Affairs made a statement Sunday afternoon, indicating that the talks encompassed discussions on four disputed locations, namely the Emerald Triangle area, Ta Muen Thom Temple, Ta Muen Toch Temple, and Ta Kwai Temple, potentially being presented to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

However, the Thai Foreign Ministry pulled out the fire hose later that same evening, issuing a formal denial at 10 pm, quashing the widespread misunderstanding and affirming that no such discussion regarding these sites was on the JBC's agenda.

In its statement, the ministry emphasized that the meeting did not include any talk about Cambodia's proposed referral of these locations to the ICJ, nor did it mention the so-called "1:200,000 map" drawn up by the Franco-Siamese Commission, countering Cambodia's assertions on that matter.
