Thailand issues a warning to Cambodia, cautioning against employing civilians to breach borders or engage in territorial disputes.

In a significant escalation since the ceasefire declaration at the end of July, clashes erupted between Thai and Cambodian forces at the border on Tuesday. The incident, which marked the most significant escalation since the truce, resulted in reported injuries on both sides.

The Thai crowd control police were forced to use rubber bullets and tear gas for crowd control, while Cambodian demonstrators, armed with wooden sticks, slingshots, and stones, obstructed Thai officials who had installed defensive barriers.

According to reports, Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet has sent out letters to world leaders and the United Nations, seeking support from the international community and ASEAN to stop Thailand's "unilateral actions." The Prime Minister's name was confirmed by the Thai foreign ministry.

Thai officials had installed barricades on Thai territory, but these were damaged by the Cambodian demonstrators. In response, the Thai foreign ministry considered the actions as irresponsible, unconstructive, and taken without due regard for the safety and interests of the people.

Cambodia reported 23 of its nationals were hurt during the incident, while some Thai personnel sustained injuries from being struck by thrown wooden sticks, stones, and slingshot projectiles. However, the number and extent of injuries were not specified.

The Thai foreign ministry stated that all actions by the Thai police were proportionate and appropriate to the circumstances. They also emphasised that Thai officials have exercised restraint throughout the incident, providing explanations to the Cambodian nationals.

The United States government called for the quick finalization of terms to establish a longer-term observer mission comprising ASEAN member states on both sides of the border. They also urged both Cambodia and Thailand to de-escalate tensions.

This incident was not met with immediate action from the Cambodian authorities, who were accused of indifference towards the incursion. Riot police were deployed to suppress the incident, using tear gas and rubber bullets to prevent escalation into civil disorder.

The Thai foreign ministry stated that they have been patient and diplomatic in their approach, but they will not tolerate provocations or deliberate intent to violate ceasefire agreements by using civilians as fronts. They emphasised that all actions will be taken in accordance with international law and with the safety and security of the people as their top priority.

As the situation continues to unfold, both sides are urged to exercise restraint and to seek diplomatic solutions to resolve the conflict. The international community, including ASEAN and the United States, remains engaged and committed to supporting a peaceful resolution to this complex issue.
