Border Conflict Between Thailand and Cambodia Remains Fragile

A fragile ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, following days of border conflict, remains in effect but has been marred by alleged violations by Cambodian forces.

According to the Royal Thai Army, Cambodian forces initiated armed attacks on several areas within Thai territory after the ceasefire began, leading to intermittent clashes and Thai self-defense responses.

The ceasefire agreement, reached during peace talks in Putrajaya, is immediate and unconditional. However, reports suggest that Cambodia violated the agreement by firing on Thai positions in multiple areas along the border.

Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs described these actions as a "flagrant violation" and called on Cambodia to immediately cease all such violations and return to full compliance with the ceasefire.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights emphasized the importance of both sides fully respecting and implementing the ceasefire agreement and urged confidence-building measures.

As of 30 July 2025, there has been no confirmed resolution or cessation of violations regarding Cambodia's alleged ceasefire breaches against Thailand. Approximately 300,000 people have fled their villages due to the recent clashes, with 138,000 on the Thai side and 140,000 on the Cambodian side.

The border commissions of the neighboring countries will meet next Monday in Cambodia. Military chiefs from both Thailand and Cambodia are set to meet today. The hope is that these meetings will lead to a resolution and a stable, peaceful border region.
