Thailand accumulates proof of Cambodia's breaches in the ceasefire, intends to boost international communication
The tense standoff between Thailand and Cambodia along their shared border continues, with renewed clashes and accusations of ceasefire violations by both nations.
In a recent statement, Phumtham, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, confirmed that evidence collection on Cambodia's alleged ceasefire violations is ongoing by the Thai military and relevant agencies. Phumtham, who is also the Acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, emphasised that Thailand will take every necessary action to protect its sovereignty.
The ceasefire, announced on July 28, 2025, collapsed within hours of its implementation. Thailand accused Cambodia of breaching the agreement at multiple border locations and using ancient temple ruins as shields. Cambodia, on the other hand, claimed that the ceasefire was holding and accused Thailand of illegally capturing Cambodian soldiers. Both countries maintain conflicting narratives, with Thailand's foreign ministry denying planned airstrikes and evacuation orders claimed by Cambodia.
The situation remains tense and contested, with foreign observers witnessing the damaged areas and Cambodia reporting illegal captures. International media coverage is ongoing, but no clear independent verification or resolution of the violations has been reported yet. Both sides continue to deploy troops near the border, and artillery fire was still observed from the Thai side as of late July/early August 2025, indicating ongoing volatility.
Phumtham acknowledged media criticism about Thailand's military success but communication shortcomings. In an effort to address this, Phumtham vowed to improve communication strategies to make the information more efficient and effective. Phumtham also confirmed that heavy weapons have not been used in the ongoing clashes.
Clashes are still occurring along the Thai-Cambodian border, according to Phumtham. The situation remains a cause for concern, with no definitive global consensus or mediated resolution publicly confirmed to date. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
