Thai Prime Minister to Address Border Controversy at Imminent JBC Gathering

Following Cambodia's announced withdrawal of troops from a contentious section of the Thai-Cambodian border, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra declared both nations would rely on the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC) to tackle ongoing land disputes and work towards lasting peace.

As of now, it appears tensions remain high between the two countries due to the recent clash that resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier on May 28. Both countries have vowed to carry out troop adjustments to decrease tensions, according to Paetongtarn's statement on Sunday.

Enhancing cooperation through the JBC, which is set to gather this Saturday, is another initiative proposed by the Prime Minister. She also spoke about conservation efforts to normalize the relationship between the two neighboring nations as soon as possible.

Cambodia's commitment to pull back troops from the Chong Bok area and revert to their positions established in 2024 has yet to be verified entirely. Royal Thai Army spokesperson Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree confirmed that Cambodian forces would relocate to the Tri Muk Pavilion, about 150-200 metres away from the disputed zone, where they had previously been stationed.

Contrary to top Cambodian officials' earlier assertions (such as Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet), who insisted their troops would stay in the contested area, Phnom Penh claimed as Cambodian territory, Cambodia had initially plateaued on pursuing talks through the JBC and instead planned to request a ruling from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to settle the matter.

The disputed land lies in the tri-border area of Thailand, Laos, and Camboda, known as the Emerald Triangle or Mom Bei in Khmer, and has become a flashpoint due to the ongoing conflict.
