Thai politician Anwar proposes dialogues under the Joint Border Committee to resolve the contentious Thailand-Cambodia border disagreement
In a telephone conversation yesterday, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim spoke with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to gain a clearer picture of the latest developments along the Thailand-Cambodia border. The conversation followed media reports that Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet alleged Thai troops prevented more than 20 families from returning to their homes in the disputed border area. However, Thai military spokesman Winthai Suvaree claimed Cambodian villagers were involved in acts of violence and illegally occupying Thai territory. No further details were provided about the specific issues being addressed in the negotiations. Anwar Ibrahim, who has been a proponent of dialogue and diplomacy to resolve disputes among ASEAN partners, urged the resolution of outstanding issues between Thailand and Cambodia through negotiations under the Joint Border Committee (JBC). The JBC is a bilateral mechanism established between Thailand and Cambodia to address and resolve unresolved border issues between the two countries. Following the escalation of tensions, Malaysia has held further discussions with both Thai and Cambodian leaders. In July, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a ceasefire brokered by Malaysia after clashes between the two countries claimed 33 lives. Anwar Ibrahim made this statement in a Facebook post today, following his conversation with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. This is not the first time Anwar Ibrahim has called for peace and diplomacy in the region. In 2019, he urged Thailand and Cambodia to resolve their border disputes peacefully, saying that the issues should be resolved through dialogue and negotiations. The conversation between Anwar Ibrahim and Hun Manet is a positive step towards resolving the ongoing border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. As a mediator, Malaysia has played a crucial role in brokering peace between the two countries, and Anwar Ibrahim's call for negotiations under the JBC is a testament to Malaysia's commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region. As the situation develops, it will be important for both Thailand and Cambodia to continue to engage in dialogue and negotiations to find a lasting solution to their border disputes. The international community will be watching closely to see how the two countries move forward in resolving this ongoing issue.
