Thai Police Hunt Cambodian Nationals in Ex-MP Lim Kimya's Murder
Thai authorities are pursuing two Cambodian nationals, Ly Ratanakrasksmey and Pich Kimsrin, in connection with the murder of former Cambodian opposition lawmaker Lim Kimya. The 73-year-old was shot dead in Thailand on 7 January 2025. His widow, Anne-Marie Lim, seeks answers and accountability.
Lim Kimya, a former MP from 2013 to 2017, was part of the main opposition party, the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP). After the CNRP's dissolution in 2017, he withdrew from politics and returned to France. Despite Hun Manet, Cambodia's leader, denying government involvement, Cambodian opposition figures accuse Hun Sen of ordering the shooting.
A Thai citizen, Ekkalak Paenoi, was arrested in Cambodia and charged with premeditated murder. He confessed to the killing in a livestream video. Anne-Marie Lim fears the alleged mastermind may never be held accountable, despite his name being known and his believed location in Cambodia.
