Thai Military Responds to Cambodia's Requests, Insists on Halting Landmine Use and False Reporting
In the ongoing border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, the Thai Army has reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the 13-point ceasefire agreement. Major General Winthai Suwaree, the spokesman for the Royal Thai Army, made this statement on Thursday.
The Thai Army's statement came in response to Cambodia's call for Thailand to respect the ceasefire agreement and release the 18 Cambodian soldiers who are currently detained by the Thai forces. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has confirmed the safety of these soldiers.
Winthai urged Cambodia to fully respect the ceasefire agreement and adhere to all 13 points. He also accused Cambodia of repeatedly violating the agreements in the past. The Thai Army has urged Cambodia to cease using anti-personnel mines, but did not comment on any actions against Cambodia regarding this issue.
The conflict, which escalated after a ceasefire agreement was supposed to take effect on 28 July 2025, has seen violent clashes, artillery, aerial bombardments, and the capture of soldiers. Landmine use remains a significant historical problem but is not highlighted as active in the 2025 incidents.
Misinformation and conflicting accusations between the two countries undermine ceasefire efforts and diplomatic resolution. Both Cambodia and Thailand have released contradictory statements about who initiated attacks, troop movements, and the nature of violations.
Winthai reassured that Thailand's handling of the 18 Cambodian soldiers is in full compliance with international law and humanitarian standards. However, he did not comment on Cambodia's call for the release of the soldiers or mention any plans to release them.
The Thai Army has also urged Cambodia to stop spreading misleading information about the conflicts. The longstanding issue of landmines in the Cambodia-Thailand border region complicates ceasefire enforcement and civilian safety but is not specified in the latest reported clashes.
The latest developments in the conflict are a reminder of the need for both countries to respect the ceasefire agreement and work towards a peaceful resolution. The Thai Army's call for Cambodia to respect the agreement and cease using anti-personnel mines is a step towards this goal. However, the ongoing misinformation and conflicting accusations between the two countries make achieving lasting peace a challenging task.
