Thai Military Pays Tribute to Soldiers Lost in Border Clash

The Thai military held a formal tribute ceremony for two soldiers who lost their lives during the armed clash along the Thai-Cambodian border in July 2025. Sgt Amarin Phasuk and SM1 Anothai Pongkaew, both serving in different units, were the fallen heroes.

The ceremony, overseen by the 25th Military Circle, took place with full military honours. Troops from the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, paid their respects to the two soldiers. Their bodies are currently at Wat Burapharam in Khumuang subdistrict, Warin Chamrap district, Ubon Ratchathani province, awaiting royal cremation rites.

The clash, part of an intense escalation in a long-running territorial dispute, resulted in the death of three more soldiers, raising the military death toll to 14. The conflict, complicated by historical, political, and nationalist factors, triggered widespread displacement and martial law declarations in several Thai border districts.

Internationally, ASEAN called for an immediate ceasefire, and the UN Security Council held emergency sessions. Despite announcements of ceasefires and diplomacy efforts, sporadic fighting continued until formal talks held in Kuala Lumpur led to an "immediate and unconditional ceasefire" declaration at the end of July 2025.

Thailand has returned the bodies of 12 Cambodian soldiers as a gesture of battlefield respect. The clash stemmed from centuries-old border disputes and nationalist tensions, complicated by family-related political rivalries in both countries. The violence was the worst in over a decade, resulting in over 130,000 people evacuated in Thailand alone.

The Thai Air Force prioritized civilian safety in F-16 air operations, ensuring minimal disruption to Thai Airways' operations during the border clashes. However, details about the identities of the three more soldiers killed in the border clashes or the Thai military's response to Cambodia's denial of new landmines were not specified.

This article serves as a tribute to Sgt Amarin Phasuk and SM1 Anothai Pongkaew, the two soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice along the Thai-Cambodian border. Their bravery and dedication will not be forgotten.
