Thai military identifies drones near Cambodian border, Cambodian soldiers withdraw following encounter
The Thai-Cambodian border conflict continues to unfold, with recent events involving intense military clashes, drone activity, and significant humanitarian impacts. On July 24, 2025, Thai forces reported Cambodian UAVs (drones) near the contested Prasat Ta Muen Thom temple, leading to an exchange of fire east of the temple.
The escalation has resulted in dozens of deaths and displaced over 300,000 civilians. Fighting spread across multiple border locations with artillery, rockets, and airstrikes targeting military and civilian areas on both sides. Martial law was declared in Thai border districts, and civilian infrastructure including hospitals and schools were hit.
However, no clashes were reported between Thai and Cambodian forces in the recent period. As a precaution, seven Civil Affairs teams from the Suranaree Task Force have been deployed across Buriram, Surin, Sisaket, and Ubon Ratchathani provinces to combat misinformation and prevent panic. The public is urged to report any suspicious objects to local authorities immediately.
In response to the crisis, military units have been mobilized to expedite recovery. EOD teams have made progress in clearing the border areas, with 269 areas successfully cleared. Efforts to repair and assist the affected households are underway, with support from central emergency funds, local budgets, disaster relief foundations, the Thai Red Cross, and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.
His Majesty the King appointed Chamnarn Chuentha, Governor of Surin, to present royal gifts and care packages to four soldiers injured in recent border incidents. Additionally, Thai Volunteer engineering teams, along with 15 local volunteers from Chanuman subdistrict, are building a new home for Volunteer Ranger Prawit Ngamsaen, expanding it with two additional rooms and a front porch to improve living conditions.
Diplomatic efforts are underway to resolve the conflict. International bodies like ASEAN and the UN have called for immediate ceasefires and diplomatic talks. On July 28, both countries declared an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire” following talks in Kuala Lumpur, although tensions remain high.
The crisis draws attention to regional stability, involving ASEAN members and external powers such as the U.S. and China. The conflict is exacerbated by domestic political struggles and nationalist rhetoric on both sides, including personal rivalries between political leaders of Thailand and Cambodia.
The Army advises the public to rely on official government and military sources for accurate information. The 2nd Army Area urges the public to rely on official channels for updates, including the Royal Thai Army, the 2nd Army Area, and provincial public information offices.
In summary, the ongoing Thai-Cambodian border conflict involves significant military and humanitarian dimensions. The latest developments reflect a volatile and unresolved situation, with diplomatic efforts ongoing to achieve a peaceful resolution. The public is urged to stay informed and vigilant, and to report any suspicious activities to local authorities.
