Thai military denounces Cambodia for infringing truce with intensive artillery assaults
The peace agreement signed between the Thai Army and Cambodia on July 28, 2025, in Putrajaya, Malaysia, aimed to put an end to the ongoing hostilities along their disputed border. However, incidents of aggression by the Cambodian forces have marred the truce, causing concern and undermining the trust between the neighbouring nations.
On Tuesday, the 2nd Army Region of Thailand reported multiple incidents of aggression by Cambodian forces around 9:30 am. The attacks targeted several areas of Thai territory, including Chong Bok, Chong An Ma, Sam Tae, Ta Kwai Temple, and Phu Makua. The aggression included provocations and the use of supporting fire weapons, which is a deliberate violation of the ceasefire.
Major General Winthai Suwaree, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Army, strongly condemned Cambodia for violating the ceasefire agreement. In response, Thai forces countered the attacks according to the situation. The Thai Army had halted fire along the Thai-Cambodian border immediately at the designated time, demonstrating their commitment to the agreement.
The breach of the ceasefire undermines the trust built between Thailand and Cambodia, and it is a violation of the agreement itself. The incidents occurred throughout the night and into the morning, despite the agreed ceasefire time. This action by the Cambodian forces is described as a deliberate violation of the ceasefire.
The ceasefire remains fragile, with a high humanitarian toll including deaths and mass displacement of civilians along the border. To address the situation, a Malaysian observation mission has been planned, and a bilateral border committee was scheduled to meet on August 4, 2025, to reinforce the ceasefire’s implementation and reduce misunderstandings.
The ceasefire was intended to de-escalate tensions and promote cooperation between the neighbouring nations. The Royal Thai Army is actively responding to the aggression by Cambodian forces, and they strictly adhered to the agreement with a genuine intent to honor the commitment made by both governments. The Thai foreign ministry has denied Cambodian claims that Bangkok planned air strikes and issued evacuation orders near the border.
Despite the challenging circumstances, both sides must work towards upholding the ceasefire agreement and fostering peace. The ongoing hostilities not only threaten the lives of civilians but also jeopardise the future of cooperation between Thailand and Cambodia.
