Thai military authorities announce permanent closure of border with Cambodia

Thailand has taken a significant step to strengthen its border security with Cambodia, as the Thai armed forces have unanimously decided to indefinitely close the border due to perceived threats to national security.

The decision was made during the fifth meeting of the committee of armed forces chiefs held at the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters in Bangkok. The meeting, which began with a moment of silence for 15 soldiers and civilians who perished in recent clashes along the border, was attended by both serving and new commanders of the armed forces.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's new cabinet, approved by His Majesty the King, includes Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit as Defence Minister and his deputy, Lt Gen Adul Boonthamchareon. The decisions regarding the border and the new framework have been submitted to the defence minister for approval.

In response to the border closure, a new fence will be constructed in areas mutually agreed upon by both Thailand and Cambodia. The first pole equipped with three CCTVs was put up near the main checkpoint to Cambodia on Friday, aiming to boost border security. Tactical roads will also be constructed along the entire border for continuous patrols and surveillance.

A new framework for responding to violations of Thailand's sovereignty has been approved, based on international Rules of Engagement (ROE). The new framework allows for immediate self-defence operations upon detection of any hostile act or intent.

The permanent checkpoints and trade crossings will remain closed until a de-escalation of the situation between Thailand and Cambodia. Continuous patrols and surveillance will take place in border areas where territory has yet to be agreed upon.

Gen Songwit Noonphukdi, the Chief of the Defence Forces, presided over the meeting, which was held to discuss the ongoing border conflict between Thailand and Cambodia. The Thai Defense Ministry is currently considering possible border openings with Cambodia.

The meeting marked a significant step towards enhancing Thailand's border security and maintaining its sovereignty in the face of perceived threats. The decisions made will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on the relationship between Thailand and Cambodia and the security of both nations.
