Thai troops strengthen border trail amid Thai-Cambodian border dispute
In a recent development, the Thai military has stepped up operations along the Thai-Cambodian border, carrying out track improvement work in the Chong Bok area of Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. This move comes amid growing tensions between the two countries and their longstanding disputes over sovereignty.
Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree, spokesman for the Royal Thai Army, confirmed that the work was taking place within Thai sovereign territory. During the operation, Cambodian soldiers approached to verify the boundary location, leading to discussions between commanding officers from both sides. Following the talks, the Cambodian side acknowledged that the roadwork was indeed within Thai territory, allowing the Thai military to resume its operations as planned.
Winthai emphasized that all actions taken by the Thai military were in full compliance with the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the survey and demarcation of the land boundary between Thailand and Cambodia. He reiterated that Thailand has strictly adhered to the agreement and has never breached its terms. The current roadwork is part of an ongoing project to improve infrastructure in several locations along the border to enhance national security operations.
This incident is not the first amid a long and complex history of Thai-Cambodian border disputes. Tensions have intensified in the past, focusing on areas surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple, with the ICJ ruling in 1962 that the temple was under Cambodian sovereignty. Any significant infrastructure projects along the contested areas would need to be carefully managed to avoid exacerbating historical tensions.
