Thai honorary degree revoked from Hun Sen
Ramkhamhaeng University Revokes Honorary Degree from Hun Sen
Ramkhamhaeng University in Thailand has taken the unprecedented step of revoking an honorary doctorate in political science awarded to former Cambodian prime minister Hun Sen. The decision was made in response to Hun Sen's actions that violated Thailand's sovereignty and involved encouraging violent acts against Thai citizens.
The university council, in a unanimous vote, concluded that Hun Sen's recent conduct contradicts the values of peace and fraternity for which the degree was awarded in 2001. They emphasized that allowing him to keep the degree would mislead the public about the award's purpose.
The council's decision was based on Hun Sen's support for severe armed force causing injuries and deaths among Thai military and civilians in recent border clashes. These actions, they said, go against the original values of peace and fraternity that the degree was meant to represent.
The revocation of the honorary degree is effective immediately. The university council did not find it appropriate for Hun Sen to retain the degree, given his actions that are contrary to the values and principles that the honorary degree represents.
The original citation praised Hun Sen's role in promoting peace and fraternity between Cambodia and Thailand. However, the council's decision to revoke the honorary degree is a statement against Hun Sen's actions that violate peace and fraternity between the two nations.
Calls are now being made for other Thai universities that also awarded Hun Sen honorary degrees to consider revoking them due to his perceived threat to Thailand’s sovereignty and national interests. Hun Sen himself has responded critically to Ramkhamhaeng University's decision.
