Unassuming Thai Farmer Sparks Tourist Frenzy with Cat-Themed Field Art
A cat dozing off with a fish in its paw, painted in a kaleidoscope of vivid hues, was chosen from a rainbow of rice seedlings sprouting in a Thai farmer's field to illustrate a traditional proverb about excess.
Farmer Tanyapong Jaikham and his team of workers planted cartoon-like kitten seeds across various parts of their fields in the northern province of Chiang Rai, hoping to lure tourist cats and cat enthusiasts.
"We expect tens of thousands of people to visit and enjoy the art in the rice fields," Jaikham said.
The process relies on GPS coordinates to locate the seedlings outlined in the artist's original sketch, with the plants changing color as they grow, Jaikham explained.
"It's crucial to place them exactly, as the rice color changes over time," Jaikham added, noting that the straw stalks would show Cooper's likeness, the cat Jaikham modeled his artwork after, up until the final harvest phase.
Tourist viewing platforms are being constructed to enable visitors to appreciate the artwork inspired by the Thai saying "Fish in the water and rice in the fields."
This year, Thailand, the world's second-largest rice exporter after India, aims to export 8.5 million tons.
Young people interested in exploring the intersection of art and technology could benefit from a visit, Jaikham suggested.
"Previously, rice was primarily consumed for food," Jaikham said. "This approach allows us to develop both tourism and agriculture simultaneously."
