In the heart of central Texas, a devastating flash flood has left a trail of destruction and heartache. As of July 5, 2025, at least 24 lives have been tragically lost, with the search for missing individuals, particularly children, continuing relentlessly [1].

The Guadalupe River, once a serene waterway, has become a destructive force, sweeping away homes, vehicles, and causing extensive damage to riverbanks. The floodwaters rose unexpectedly late Thursday and early Friday, following torrential rain [1]. U.S. officials, including former President Donald Trump, have described the event as "terrible" and "shocking" [1].

The most affected area is Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp for girls, where approximately 20 children have gone missing [1][2]. The exact number of missing people is still unknown, with local officials reporting between 23 and 25 girls among the missing [1]. Rescue teams, including nine ground rescue teams, 14 helicopters, and 12 drones, are working tirelessly to locate and save the missing children [1].

So far, more than 230 people have been rescued or evacuated, with 167 of those rescues conducted by helicopter [1]. Remarkably, some individuals have been rescued from trees, emphasising the speed and severity of the rising waters [1].

Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of disaster for affected parts of Texas and assured the public that the search will continue until everyone is found [1]. To aid in the rescue efforts, Homeland Security Minister Kristi Noem has deployed forces, including the US Coast Guard [1].

Residents in the area were advised to move to higher ground, and central collection points were created [1]. Vice Governor Dan Patrick confirmed the deaths of both adults and children, and suggested that some missing children may have sought safety by climbing onto trees [1].

In Kendall County, another death was reported, initial reports suggesting it may be flood-related [1].

The camp, which currently houses over 750 children, remains a focal point of the search efforts [1]. Updates on the rescue efforts and the fate of the missing children are expected as operations continue. Our thoughts are with the families affected by this tragic event.
