Houston Texans Sign Veteran Safety Jalen Mills to Bolster Depth

The Houston Texans have signed free-agent safety Jalen Mills, ESPN reports, as the team grapples with injuries and off-field issues among its current safeties.

Jalen Mills, a 31-year-old defensive back with nearly a decade of NFL experience, will provide much-needed depth to the Texans' secondary. Mills was a seventh-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016 and has since played 115 games with 91 starts, accumulating 8 interceptions, 59 passes broken up, and 450 tackles in his career.

Mills' versatility across the secondary has been evident throughout his career. He has played the majority of his snaps as a cornerback but has also filled roles in the slot, box, free safety, and even some defensive line snaps. In 2020, Mills had one of his best seasons, recording 74 tackles, 1.5 sacks, one interception, and a 68.9 Pro Football Focus grade.

Most recently, Mills played for the New York Jets in 2024, starting 8 of 9 games and recording 44 tackles, 6 passes defended, one interception, and one forced fumble.

The addition of Mills to the Texans comes on the heels of an injury to safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and legal troubles involving safety Jimmie Ward. Gardner-Johnson sustained a right leg injury in practice on Thursday, and no specific details about the nature of his injury were provided in the report. Ward was arrested for violating conditions of his release in a separate legal matter.

The exact terms of Mills' contract with the Texans were not disclosed in the report. Mills spent four years with the Eagles before signing a four-year, $24 million contract with the New England Patriots in 2021. He transitioned more to safety by 2023 and caught on with the Giants briefly in 2024 before joining the Jets taxi squad and active roster that year.

With Mills joining the team, the Texans hope to address immediate roster needs and bolster their secondary in preparation for the upcoming season.
