Terrorist convicted for the 2015 murder of a Jordanian pilot in Syria, receives life imprisonment in Sweden

In a landmark ruling on July 31, 2025, a Stockholm court sentenced Osama Krayem, a Swedish citizen of Palestinian descent, to life imprisonment for his role in the 2015 murder of Jordanian pilot Maaz al-Kassasbeh by the Islamic State (IS) group in Syria.

Krayem, born in Malmö, was convicted of war crimes and acts of terrorism connected to the gruesome murder of al-Kassasbeh, whose F-16 was shot down. The court found that although Krayem did not ignite the flames himself, his armed presence and active participation in confining the pilot amounted to a direct contribution to the murder.

The details of the exact location and date of the murder remain unknown, but the investigation has identified the location. Krayem was at the execution site, uniformed and armed, and allowed himself to be filmed.

During the trial, Krayem remained silent throughout the hearings, and segments from interrogations with him were read out and played. His lawyer stated that he was only on-site for 15 to 20 minutes and was unaware of the impending execution.

The murder, filmed by IS and widely circulated, was one of the group's most notorious atrocities at the height of its power. The killing sparked international outrage in 2015.

The court awarded compensation to the parents and siblings of al-Kassasbeh, amounting to 80,000 Swedish kronor ($8,200) each. Mikael Westerlund, the pilot's brother's lawyer, expressed in court that Krayem seems to have been inspired by terrorist activities, leading him to participate in and be convicted of terrorist acts in Europe.

Krayem is currently serving a life sentence in Belgium for involvement in the 2015 Paris attacks and the 2016 Brussels terrorist attacks. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment in Belgium for the 2016 attacks at Brussels' main airport and metro station.

Swedish authorities agreed to hold Krayem for nine months for the investigation and trial, with a deadline of December 27 for his return to France. The exact date of the murder is unknown, but the investigation has identified the location. Krayem showed no empathy or remorse during the court proceedings.
