Terrorist Attacks Declared in Brno and Kursk Regions Due to Bridge Collapses

In the early hours of June 1, 2025, a series of shocking events unfolded across Russia's railway network, causing widespread disruption and tragedy. The Investigative Committee of Russia has classified these incidents as terrorist acts, with the inquiries being led by the Committee.

The first incident occurred on May 31 in the Bryansk region, where a passenger train with 388 people on board was brought down by the collapse of a car bridge on a single-track section from Pilshino to Vygonichi. Sadly, seven lives were lost in this tragic accident.

On the same day, another bridge collapsed in the Bryansk region, this time on the Unecha-Zhecha section. Damage to the track was discovered at 10:52 Moscow time, and an investigative team later discovered an unexploded bomb under a bridge on the section between Unecha and Zhecha stations. The bomb, of American origin, consisted of approximately 10 kg of plastic explosive C-4.

A day later, on June 1, another bridge collapsed in the Kursk region, causing a cargo train to derail onto the road. The train's driver and two assistants were injured as a result. Around 3:00 AM, a bridge on the 48th kilometer of the Trosna-Kalinovka highway also collapsed, adding to the chaos.

As a result of these terrorist acts, over 100 individuals, including children, are receiving medical aid. The track measurement train passing on the Unecha-Zhecha section was not damaged by the explosion, and Russian Railways swiftly rebuilt the destroyed overpass in Kursk starting June 30, reflecting urgency in restoring critical infrastructure after the sabotage classification.

Russian officials have suggested Ukrainian drones and sabotage operations are targeting Russia’s rail network, aiming to disrupt transport and logistics. There is evidence of increased Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian railways, causing delays and damage, although Russian investigations have not publicly disclosed conclusive proof linking Ukraine directly to these specific bridge collapses.

The investigation is actively ongoing, with Russian authorities treating the incidents as terrorist acts, and strongly suspecting Ukrainian sabotage played a role, mainly through drone strikes and other means. However, publicly available official findings remain limited and partly classified. The conflict context and recent patterns of attacks on railway infrastructure support Russia’s claims, but lack definitive publicly released evidence confirming direct Ukrainian responsibility for these particular collapses.
