The latest update on the ongoing ceasefire talks in the Gaza conflict is that Hamas has agreed to a temporary 60-day ceasefire proposal. This agreement includes a cessation of military operations during that period to allow humanitarian aid entry and a partial release of hostages.
According to reports, Hamas has agreed to release half of the approximately 50 hostages taken in the October 7, 2023 attack. However, the Israeli government has not yet responded to this proposal. If implemented, the ceasefire will require time, as seen in past ceasefire efforts.
The current ceasefire proposal is a variation of a multi-stage peace initiative originally drafted by mediators from the United States, Egypt, and Qatar. This plan, which was accepted by Hamas in May 2024, aimed for an initial six-week ceasefire, full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, a hostages-prisoners exchange, and a multi-year reconstruction program.
However, a formal agreement signed in January 2025, which included several rounds of hostage exchanges and a ceasefire lasting until mid-March 2025, broke down when Israel launched surprise airstrikes in response to Hamas’s refusal to release hostages and reject extending the ceasefire.
Since then, renewed mediation by Qatar and Egypt has been ongoing to restart peace talks and secure a ceasefire. The key sticking point remains Israel’s demand for the unconditional release of all hostages, while Hamas is willing to release only half of them upfront during the ceasefire.
The dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, with severe hunger and displacement, is intensifying political and public pressure internationally to reach an agreement. The ongoing negotiation for a ceasefire in Gaza is being led by the US, Egypt, and Qatar.
In addition, it has been reported that the Israeli government is set to receive a military plan for the takeover of Gaza city on Tuesday. The nature of this plan remains unclear at this time.
The ceasefire proposal, as it stands, does not specify the identity of the groups involved beyond Hamas. Furthermore, the identity of the hostages remains undisclosed. The mediators are working towards a new ceasefire in the nearly two-year-old Gaza war before the start of a new offensive.
