Terence Stamp, the antagonist in the "Superman" series, has passed away at the age of 87.
British actor Terence Stamp has passed away at the age of 87. The cause of his death and location were not disclosed.
Stamp, who was born in Stepney, London, in 1938, began his career with a bang, making his film debut in Tony Richardson's The Loved One in 1965. He quickly rose to fame with his Oscar-nominated performance as Billy Budd in 1962.
Throughout his six-decade career, Stamp worked with some of the most notable directors in the industry, including Pier Paolo Pasolini, John Schlesinger, Steven Soderbergh, and Oliver Stone. He also collaborated with Federico Fellini in the 1960s, a collaboration he reflected on in the documentary Fellini: I'm a Born Liar in 2002.
Stamp was particularly known for his complex villainous roles, most notably as General Zod in the Superman films (1978 and 1980), a role that would go on to influence future portrayals of comic-book villains. He also won the Golden Globe for New Star of the Year - Actor for his role as Billy Budd.
Other notable films in Stamp's impressive repertoire include Meetings with Remarkable Men (1979), The Hit (1984), The Company of Wolves (1984), The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), The Limey (1999), Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), Bowfinger (1999), and Red Planet (2000).
Stamp's family stated that he leaves behind an extraordinary body of work. His work as an actor and a writer will continue to inspire people. The New York Times and the Guardian have announced his death.
In his later years, Stamp continued to act, last appearing in the horror thriller Last Night in Soho in 2021. He will be deeply missed by his fans and the film industry.
