Tennis superstar Rafael Nadal emerges victorious yet again at the French Open, clinching a record 14th title and increasing his grand slam tally to an impressive 22.
Rafael Nadal, the Spanish tennis legend, added another feather to his cap by winning the 14th French Open and the record-extending 22nd Grand Slam title on Sunday. This victory marks Nadal's 112th win at the French Open, compared to just 3 losses, making him the oldest male champion at Roland Garros, having won at the age of 36.
Nadal started the match against Casper Ruud, the in-form player on clay since the start of 2020 with 66 wins on the surface, in a dominating fashion. He led 2-0 in the first set, which he finished in 49 minutes.
However, Ruud managed to break Nadal for a 3-1 lead in the second set. But Nadal responded with a double break for a 4-3 lead and eventually won the set. Nadal's first double fault of the final handed Ruud three established points in the second set, but it was not enough to upset the reigning champion.
Nadal was in full control in the third set, winning three breaks. The third set was over in 30 minutes, as Nadal sealed the win with a backhand down the line, his 37th victor of the tournament.
Nadal's victory marks him two Grand Slam titles ahead of his old opponents Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer. Nadal claimed before the final that he would prefer to change his shoes for the match, but it seemed like the change was not necessary as he dominated the game from the start.
Casper Ruud, the first Norwegian male to compete in a championship match at the majors, put up a good fight, but Nadal's experience and skill proved too much to handle. With this win, Nadal's 22 Grand Slam titles include victories across all four major tournaments, completing the Career Grand Slam.
Nadal's path to the final was not easy. He needed the best part of 12 hours to see off Felix Auger-Aliassime, Novak Djokovic, and Alexander Zverev in the previous rounds. But Nadal's resilience and determination shone through, as he clinched the title once again at Roland Garros.
