It's no grassy knoll for Zverev: Alexander Zverev advances to his first grass final since 2017 in Stuttgart, but once again, he's unable to bypass his most killer opponent – Taylor Fritz. After the match, the Stuttgart native quips with Fritz.

Alexander Zverev falls short of his first career grass title in the ATP tournament in Stuttgart. The world number three loses the nail-biter of a final to American Taylor Fritz, 3-6, 6-7 (0-7). Zverev, who stormed into Baden-Württemberg with a mountain of fury following his French Open exit and a spat with Boris Becker, now waits for his second title of '25. His only championship this year came on clay in Munich.

The match was paused for over an hour due to rain at the onset of the second set. Upon resumption, the match was a brutal battle – but Zverev had no way to seize the win in the tiebreak. The game ended after 1 hour and 25 minutes.

"Stay clear of me, Fritz" - Zverev's playful jab

"I've had it, stay away from me, please don't visit Germany for the next couple of years," Zverev bantered with his final rival during the awards ceremony, who's quickly becoming his nemesis. During the tournament, Fritz dealt Zverev his fifth consecutive loss. As of Monday, Fritz will rank 4th in the ATP rankings. Zverev looks to the future optimistically: "I aim to reach the French Open final next year, and if that doesn't happen, I'm happy to return to Stuttgart."

Zverev (28) hadn't felt overly comfortable on grass in the past, but he reached the final in Stuttgart for the first time since Halle in 2017. Despite the week catering more to physical preparation for Wimbledon, which starts on June 30, Zverev worked tirelessly on his fitness, sometimes in sweltering heat, both before and after his matches.

However, it wasn't enough for his 25th title on the professional tour. Zverev's next opportunity will be at the tournament in Halle/Westfalen next week. World number one Jannik Sinner (Italy) will also be participating in this Wimbledon warm-up event.
