Tennis star Venus Williams granted wild card entry for US Open singles tournament
US Open 2025 Wild Card Recipients Announced
The USTA has announced the wild card recipients for the 2025 US Open, with a mix of established stars and promising young talents set to compete at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York from August 24 to September 7.
Women's Singles Wild Cards
Former champion Serena Williams, aged 45, is one of eight women's wild card recipients named by tournament organisers. Williams, who will be the oldest singles entrant at the US Open since Renee Richards in 1981, will return from a 16-month layoff to compete in this year's event. The American, who has won 49 WTA titles with the most recent one coming in 2016 at the Taiwan Open, will also compete in the US Open mixed doubles next week with Reilly Opelka.
Joining Williams are Americans Clervie Ngounoue, Julieta Pareja, Caty McNally, Valerie Glozman, and Alyssa Ahn. France's Caroline Garcia, aged 31, has received a wild card for her final Grand Slam before retirement, having reached the US Open semi-finals three years ago as her best performance at a major. Australia's Talia Gibson is also a wild card recipient for the US Open.
Men's Singles Wild Cards
On the men's side, American players Brandon Holt, Nishesh Basavareddy, Tristan Boyer, Emilio Nava, Stefan Dostanic, and Darwin Blanch have received wild cards for the US Open. France's Valentin Royer and Australia's Tristan Schoolkate were the final two wild cards for the men's side.
The US Open singles main draw begins on August 24. Williams, a five-time Wimbledon singles champion, will be aiming to add another Grand Slam title to her impressive resume, having lost in the final of the US Open in 1997 to Martina Hingis. Venus Williams also finished runner-up to Serena in 2002.
Caroline Garcia, who will be competing in her final Grand Slam before retirement, will also be looking to make a deep run in the tournament. Serena Williams made her comeback last month and became the oldest WTA match winner since Martina Navratilova in 2004. She underwent surgery last year to remove uterine fibroids.
The US Open will be a significant event for all the wild card recipients, with the opportunity to make a name for themselves in the world of tennis. Fans are eagerly awaiting the start of the tournament to see how these players will perform on the big stage.
