Tennis star Venus Williams, aged 45, granted unprecedented wild-card entry for the US Open tournament
Venus Williams, a five-time US Open finalist and two-time US Open singles champion, will make history at the 2025 US Open. At 45 years old, she will be the oldest woman in the US Open singles main draw since 1981. The tournament will take place from August 24 to September 7, 2025.
The USTA has invited Williams to compete in the tournament, marking her 25th singles appearance at the event since her debut in 1997. Her significance as a competitor lies in her extraordinary longevity in top-level tennis and her impressive record at the US Open.
Williams, who has won seven major singles championships in her career, will be aiming to add to her career Grand Slam tally. After a 16-month hiatus due to injuries and surgery for uterine fibroids, her return at age 45 underscores remarkable resilience and passion for the sport.
In 2000 and 2001, Williams won the US Open singles title, and she is one of the most decorated players in the tournament's history. Her presence at the 2025 US Open is historic as she continues to compete at an elite level well into her mid-40s, inspiring both fans and fellow athletes alike.
In addition to the women's singles tournament, Williams will also be competing in the mixed doubles competition. Her partner for the mixed doubles event will be Reilly Opelka.
Williams last competed at a Grand Slam at the 2023 US Open, where she lost in the first round. However, her return to action at the DC Open in July 2023 was significant, as she became the oldest woman to win a tour-level singles match since a 47-year-old Martina Navratilova did so in 2004.
Despite not winning a match at the American major since 2019, Williams remains a fan favourite and represents the spirit of perseverance. Her record-extending 25th singles appearance at the US Open is a testament to her dedication and love for the sport.
