Tennis star Swiatek defeats Paolini to secure his inaugural Cincinnati Open victory.
Iga Świątek has added another feather to her cap, winning her 11th WTA 1000 title at the Cincinnati Open on Monday. The Polish tennis star defeated Jasmine Paolini 7-5, 6-4, moving within one game of the title without dropping a set throughout the tournament.
Swiatek, the third seed in the tournament, saved her first chance to serve out the opening set and sealed the victory at the first opportunity in the second set. She converted all six of her break points in the final, including a crucial one at 4-3 in the second set to save two break points.
This victory marks Swiatek's return to the world number two ranking, a position she last held before the French Open. Her last WTA 1000 crown was at the Italian Open last year.
Swiatek's record against Paolini in matches now stands at 6-0. The win also places her second only to Serena Williams (with 13 titles) in the history of WTA 1000 tournaments since their inception in 2009. Among her notable WTA 1000 victories is the 2025 Cincinnati Open, which she won after three prior semifinal appearances there, becoming the first Polish player to win this tournament in the Open era.
Regarding her ranking progression, as of August 2025, Świątek is ranked world No. 2 in the PIF WTA rankings, having moved up following her Cincinnati win, leapfrogging American Coco Gauff. She has previously reached world No. 1 and had maintained this top ranking for 100 consecutive weeks, a mark that placed her ninth on the all-time weeks-at-No.1 list.
Swiatek expressed her gratitude towards her team after the match. She was surprised and happy about her win, especially considering the tough competition she faced throughout the tournament.
Looking ahead, Swiatek and Casper Ruud are set to team up in the US Open mixed doubles event. The duo will aim to replicate their success from the French Open, where they won the mixed doubles title in 2021.
